Why use an eSIM in Thailand?

Land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) after midnight and the first thing past customs is a row of operator counters, AIS on one side and True on the other, each with a line of tourists holding passports open at the photo page. Thailand registers every SIM to an identity document, so the clerk photographs your passport before you get a number, and the airport packs are priced for people who have just landed and want it done. It works, but it eats the first half hour of your holiday.

An eSIM for Thailand skips that queue. It is installed before you leave home, connects the moment your phone finds a Thai network in the terminal, and leaves your home SIM in place for calls and bank OTPs. That matters on a trip where Grab, Google Maps, LINE and a translation app do most of the work, from the BTS in Bangkok to a longtail boat timetable in Krabi. Data starts when you land, and the roaming charges never happen.

Best Thailand eSIM for tourists: what to look for

A typical Thailand itinerary is a week to a fortnight with two or three stops: Bangkok, then a beach on the Andaman or Gulf side, sometimes Chiang Mai as well. Choose validity that covers the whole route with a day spare, and data for a heavy user. Maps run all day, menus get photographed and translated, Grab is open every evening, and beach and temple photos go straight to family chats. Streaming on a Koh Samui balcony adds up fastest, so a bigger size is rarely wasted (see the plans above); a top-up queues behind the current plan if needed.

5G from AIS and True covers Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya and Chiang Mai, and a 5G phone will use it automatically; elsewhere 4G is what you get and it is perfectly good. Hotspot matters more in Thailand than in most countries, because bungalow Wi-Fi on the islands is often shared by the whole resort.

You do not need a Thai number. Grab and Bolt register with your existing number, hotels message on WhatsApp or LINE, and PromptPay QR payments need a Thai bank account regardless of SIM. If Thailand is one leg of a longer loop through Vietnam, Cambodia or Malaysia, a Southeast Asia bundle saves reinstalling; for Thailand alone, the single-country plan is the better value. Confirm your handset is eSIM-capable on the device page first.

Networks and coverage: where your eSIM works

Thailand's networks are AIS, True (which absorbed dtac in 2023) and the state-owned NT. The two big ones run 5G across Bangkok, the eastern seaboard around Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai and the larger provincial cities, with 4G reaching almost every town and main road in between. The plan card shows which partner network your eSIM uses; the phone picks the strongest signal itself.

Coverage thins where the geography does. The mountain road from Chiang Mai to Pai and on to Mae Hong Son drops in and out, the interiors of Khao Sok and Khao Yai national parks have little signal beyond the visitor areas, and ferries lose the network once they leave the bay between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. In Bangkok the MRT underground stations and tunnels are covered, as is the BTS. On the islands the developed beaches are fine; the quiet ends of Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe are patchier.

  • Bangkok: 5G throughout, including the MRT and Suvarnabhumi.
  • Phuket: strong on the west-coast beaches and in Phuket Town.
  • Pattaya: dense coverage along Beach Road and Jomtien.
  • Chiang Mai: good in the city and on Doi Suthep, weaker towards Pai.
  • Krabi: fine in Ao Nang and Railay, weak on boat trips out to the islands.
  • Koh Samui: solid on Chaweng and Lamai, thinner inland.
  • Hua Hin and Chiang Rai: reliable 4G in town.
  • Koh Phangan and Koh Tao: good near the piers and main beaches only.

Thailand eSIM vs local SIM vs roaming

Travel eSIM (eSIMify)Local SIMHome-carrier roaming
Setup: installed at home, live at BKK, DMK or HKT arrivals.Queue at an AIS or True counter, or a 7-Eleven in town, with your passport.Nothing to do; the per-day rate is decided by your carrier.
Cost pattern: one prepaid amount for the whole trip.Cheap in town, dearer at the airport; tourist packs have short expiry.Daily packs add up quickly over a two-week holiday.
Keep your home number: yes, it stays in for calls and OTPs.Only on a dual-SIM phone with the physical slot free.Yes.
Local number: no, data only.Yes, a Thai number.No.
Networks / speed: partner network 4G/5G, auto-selected.5G in cities on the operator you chose.Whichever Thai network your carrier partners with.
Passport registration: none.Passport photographed and registered at purchase.None.
Best for: holidays of up to a month, island-hopping included.Stays of a month or more, or anyone needing a Thai number.Very short business trips billed to a company.

For a normal holiday the eSIM wins on convenience and on avoiding surprise charges. A local SIM makes sense if you are staying a month or longer or need a Thai number for a condo booking or a local delivery app. Roaming only suits a two-day trip where someone else pays the bill.

How to activate your Thailand eSIM

  1. Pick a Thailand plan above and check out; the eSIM arrives by email within minutes.
  2. iPhone on iOS 17.4 or later: tap the direct install link in the email. Older iPhones: Settings, then Mobile Data, then Add eSIM, and scan the QR code.
  3. Android: Settings, then Connections or Network, then SIM manager, then Add eSIM; scan the QR code or type the SM-DP+ code.
  4. Give the line a clear label such as Thailand data.
  5. Switch on Data Roaming for the eSIM line and turn mobile data off on your home SIM, which stays in the phone for calls and OTPs.
  6. After landing at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang or Phuket, select the eSIM as your data line; it connects while you walk to immigration.
  7. Validity starts at that first connection, so installing a week early loses nothing.

When should I install my Thailand eSIM?

Install the Thailand eSIM on home Wi-Fi a few days before departure, while there is still time to sort out any phone problem. Then leave it switched off as the data line. It cannot start counting down until it has connected to a network in Thailand, so there is no cost to being early. If you are flying via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Colombo, keep your home SIM on during the layover; the Thai plan is for Thailand only. Turn it on when the wheels touch down at BKK, DMK or HKT.

Travel tips for Thailand

Keep your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM in the phone with data roaming off so that bank and UPI OTPs still arrive; the eSIM handles everything else. WhatsApp voice and video calls work without restriction in Thailand, so calling home costs nothing beyond data. UPI is not accepted in Thai shops, so carry a card and some baht for markets and boats.

Thailand is one and a half hours ahead of IST. Sockets are a mix of Type A, B and C, and most take Indian two-round-pin chargers without an adapter; three-pin Indian plugs need one. Bangkok has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, and Phuket from Delhi and Mumbai. For Indian food, Pahurat next to Chinatown is Bangkok's Little India, and the Sukhumvit sois have plenty of Punjabi and South Indian restaurants. Vegetarians should learn the word jay, which marks vegetarian food and is everywhere during Phuket's October Vegetarian Festival.
