Phuket International (HKT) sits at the far north of the island, and the transfer south to Patong, Kata or Rawai is a genuine 45 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic. There is no rail on Phuket, so the arrival hall decision is airport minibus, the smart bus down the west coast, a metered taxi or a ride-hailing pickup, and each of those goes better when you can see live routes and prices on your own screen.

Operator kiosks in the arrivals hall do sell tourist SIMs, with a passport scan and registration, but the counters bunch up when several international flights land together and the wait can be longer than the drive. An eSIM installed on Wi-Fi before you fly avoids the whole detour and starts its validity only when the phone first attaches to a Thai network after landing. Download the whole island offline plus the Phang Nga coast, because beach access roads are poorly signposted and your driver may not speak much English. The apps that matter here are ride-hailing, the ferry and speedboat operators' booking pages, weather and sea-state forecasts during monsoon months, and translation. Resort Wi-Fi is fine in the room and unreliable by the pool or on the beachfront, so a hotspot from the eSIM is the practical fix for a laptop.
