Arriving in Bangkok: airport SIM counters vs eSIM
Bangkok has two working airports and they behave differently. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) puts the operator SIM counters right in the arrivals hall, staffed and busy, with a passport check and a short registration before the SIM is handed over; Don Mueang (DMK), the base for most low-cost flights, is smaller and the desks thin out late at night. Either way the queue lands at the exact moment you want to be moving.
With an eSIM the sequence is reversed. You install it on Wi-Fi at home, it stays dormant, and the plan begins counting only when the handset first registers on a Thai network after landing. That means Grab, Bolt or inDrive are ready before you reach the kerb, and the Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi to Phaya Thai is an informed choice rather than a guess. Coverage in Bangkok and around
Thailand's networks are AIS, True and NT, and Bangkok is one of the better-covered capitals in the region: 5G is routine across Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam, Ratchada and the riverside, with 4G everywhere else. The MRT's underground stations and tunnels carry mobile service, so you keep data between Chatuchak and Hua Lamphong. What slows things down is density — Chatuchak weekend market, Khao San at night and the sky-bridge crowds around Siam all congest the cell. Ride the Chao Phraya express boats and coverage holds along the river. On day trips to Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi or the floating markets you stay connected on the main roads, with thinner service in the plantation back lanes.
Staying connected in Bangkok: practical tips
Download offline maps for central Bangkok plus Ayutthaya before you go, because address hunting in the sois defeats memory alone. Thailand runs heavily on QR payments and app-based booking, so the apps that actually need data are Grab, the ferry and rail apps, LINE for restaurant and tour contact, and translation for market negotiations. Café and mall Wi-Fi is plentiful but many networks ask for a Thai mobile number to send a login code, which your own data neatly avoids. Hotspot from the eSIM if you are working from a co-working space with shared Wi-Fi. Humidity plus constant screen use flattens a battery by mid-afternoon, so carry a power bank. Check handset support on devices.

Does an eSIM work on the Bangkok MRT and BTS?
Yes. The MRT's underground stations and running tunnels carry mobile coverage, and the elevated BTS Skytrain has an uninterrupted signal along its whole route. You can follow live maps, check stops and book an onward Grab from the platform without losing data.
Is 5G available in Bangkok?
Yes, 5G is widely available across central Bangkok, including Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam, Ratchadaphisek and the riverfront, as well as both airports. The device chooses the strongest signal on its own and drops to 4G in the outer suburbs and on provincial roads.
Can I use the same plan on a trip to Ayutthaya or Kanchanaburi?
You can. Plans cover Thailand as a whole, so day trips north to Ayutthaya or west to Kanchanaburi need no change. Coverage is solid on the main highways and in the towns themselves, and weakens on rural back roads and in the river gorges.
Do I need a Thai number for Grab in Bangkok?
No. Grab works on your existing account with data only, and driver contact happens in the app. Our plans are data-only by design, so keep your home SIM in the phone for bank one-time passwords and airline messages during the trip.
What happens if I fly on to Phuket or Chiang Mai?
Nothing changes. The same Thailand plan follows you domestically, so a connecting flight to Phuket, Krabi or Chiang Mai simply reconnects to a local tower on arrival. There is no re-registration, and remaining data continues to run down as normal.
