Almost nobody arrives in Pattaya directly. The usual route is a landing at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) followed by a two-hour road transfer south-east, either by airport bus, private car or minivan; a smaller number fly into U-Tapao (UTP), which is much closer but served by fewer flights. That long transfer is precisely why data at the terminal door matters more here than in a city where the hotel is fifteen minutes away.

Queuing at a SIM counter with a passport before a two-hour drive is time badly spent. An eSIM installed at home over Wi-Fi activates on its own the first time the handset registers on a Thai network after landing, so you can confirm a bus departure, call a Grab or Bolt, or message the hotel that you are running late — all before leaving arrivals. Pattaya sits in one of Thailand's most heavily built corridors, so AIS, True and NT all deliver strong service and 5G is normal along Beach Road, Second Road, Jomtien, Naklua and up on Pratumnak Hill. The eastern seaboard highway back to Bangkok stays covered end to end, which is unusual for a two-hour transfer. Congestion appears where crowds do — Walking Street late at night and the Bali Hai pier terminal when several island boats load at once. The ferry across to Koh Larn keeps a signal for most of the short crossing because both ends are close and populated, whereas the longer run out to Koh Samet from Ban Phe has a genuine mid-channel gap.

Save Pattaya, Jomtien and the Sattahip coast offline, plus the highway back to the airport if you are self-driving. Useful data-hungry apps here are ride-hailing, the pier and speedboat booking pages for Koh Larn, translation for markets, and hotel messaging. Bar and café Wi-Fi is everywhere but frequently open and unencrypted, so keep anything involving accounts or payments on your own connection rather than a shared network. Tethering a laptop off the eSIM is the sensible move if you are staying long-term in a condo with contended building Wi-Fi.
