Best eSIM for Tanzania

A Tanzania trip is usually two trips joined together, and both are awkward for connectivity. First the safari circuit out of Arusha through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, or a Kilimanjaro climb from Moshi, where you are in a vehicle or on a mountain for days. Then Zanzibar, where the pace drops and the phone comes back out for boat trips and dinner bookings.

Local SIM cards here are registered biometrically, which for a visitor means an operator shop, a passport and fingerprints before the line will work at all. That is not what you want on the morning your safari vehicle is leaving. Landing at Kilimanjaro (JRO), Julius Nyerere in Dar es Salaam (DAR) or Abeid Amani Karume in Zanzibar (ZNZ) with an eSIM already installed means you are connected for the drive to the lodge without any of it.

Ten days to a fortnight is typical, and data use is uneven: quiet on game drives and the mountain, then heavy in Zanzibar when a week of photographs and video goes home at once. Buy for the full trip length rather than for the days you expect to be online, and read the plan card above for what each option includes.

You will not need a Tanzanian number. Lodges, safari operators and dive schools all confirm by email or WhatsApp, and transfers are arranged in advance. Check the plan card for hotspot if you want to share with a partner in a lodge with poor Wi-Fi, which is common in the parks. The networks that exist in Tanzania are Vodacom, Airtel and Halotel, and 4G LTE is the connection to plan around. Coverage is good in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi, Dodoma and across Zanzibar's main towns and resort coasts. It thins substantially in the national parks: the Serengeti has signal near some gates and lodges and nothing in between, Ngorongoro is intermittent on the crater rim, and Kilimanjaro's routes are largely without service above the lower forest. Assume long offline stretches on any game drive.

The biometric registration step is what settles it for most visitors on a two-week trip: it costs an arrival morning you would rather spend driving to Arusha. Take a local SIM if you are here for a season or working in the country. Roaming is worth checking only if your carrier prices Tanzania unusually well.

3. Install on home Wi-Fi. Lodge Wi-Fi in the parks is not reliable enough for setup.

5. Turn Data Roaming on for the eSIM line and mobile data off on your home SIM, which stays active for calls and OTPs.
6. At Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, select the eSIM as your data line before the transfer to your lodge.

Install several days before departure while you have solid Wi-Fi. The plan stays dormant until the eSIM first connects to a Tanzanian network, so being early is free and being late can mean arriving at Kilimanjaro airport at night with no way to set it up.
