Flights reach the island at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), a compact terminal a few kilometres south of Stone Town where the walk from aircraft to arrivals hall takes minutes. Operator kiosks sell tourist SIMs near the exit, but Tanzanian prepaid registration is biometric and identity-linked, which means form-filling, fingerprints and a wait that lengthens sharply when two international flights land close together.

Nobody wants to spend that first hour queuing in the heat. Transfers on Zanzibar are almost entirely pre-booked hotel cars and licensed taxis rather than app-based rides, so the practical need on landing is being able to message a driver who has parked out of sight, confirm which beach village your hotel is actually in, and check whether the road to Nungwi or Paje is the ninety-minute version or the two-hour one.

The interior is thinner. Jozani forest, the spice farm lanes and the mangrove tracks towards Michamvi have gaps, and the far north-east villages can lose service between settlements. Boat trips to Mnemba, Prison Island and the sandbanks are effectively offline once you are out on the water.
