Langkawi International (LGK) is small enough that you are outside within minutes, and that is where the island's particular problem starts: there is no meaningful public transport, so almost everyone leaves in a hire car or a taxi, and the resorts are scattered from Pantai Cenang to Tanjung Rhu. A wrong turn on the ring road costs a real half hour. Many arrive instead by ferry from Kuala Perlis or Penang, stepping off at Kuah jetty with the same distances ahead.

SIM desks on the island are limited and not always open for late flights or evening ferries. Maxis, CelcomDigi and U Mobile all reach Langkawi, with the strongest service around Kuah, Pantai Cenang, the airport and the cable car base at Oriental Village; 5G appears in the main developed pockets while much of the island runs comfortably on 4G. The mountainous spine and the mangrove channels of the Kilim geoforest park are the honest weak points — deep in the mangroves and under the limestone cliffs the signal comes and goes. Island-hopping boats to Pulau Dayang Bunting and Beras Basah lose service in open water. Very close to the maritime border with Thailand, near Koh Lipe, a handset may see Thai networks that a Malaysia plan cannot use.

Download the whole island offline before you arrive, because the ring road junctions are lightly signposted and resort entrances are easy to miss at night. Data matters here for hire-car navigation, boat and cable car bookings, weather during the monsoon shoulder, and restaurant hours that change out of season. Resort Wi-Fi is usually fine in the room and non-existent on the beach or by the pool, so tethering from the eSIM is the practical fix for a laptop. Take a power bank on island-hopping days, when the phone is doing GPS, camera and video for hours in the heat.
