Johor Bahru is unusual because its busiest entry point is not its airport. Senai International (JHB) handles domestic and regional flights, but a large share of visitors land at Singapore's Changi and cross north over the Causeway to Woodlands or the Second Link at Tuas, either by bus, car or the shuttle train between JB Sentral and Woodlands. Immigration queues at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar can be long, and knowing which crossing is moving is genuinely useful information.

That is where data on arrival matters. An eSIM installed at home over Wi-Fi does not activate until your handset first registers on a Malaysian network, which for a land crossing happens as you clear the border rather than at an airport — and that first connection is when the plan's validity starts.
