Vientiane is a capital you can arrive in three ways. Wattay International Airport (VTE) is barely fifteen minutes from the riverside, the railway station on the northern edge of the city connects to the line running towards the Chinese border, and a steady stream of travellers crosses the Friendship Bridge by bus from Nong Khai in Thailand. Lao SIM cards require passport registration, and the airport shops keep their own hours, which does not always match a late arrival. An eSIM installed at home over Wi-Fi is simpler in every scenario: it becomes active when your handset first registers on a Lao network, and for bridge arrivals that can happen while you are still on the crossing, with validity starting from that moment. Data straight away is useful because Vientiane's guesthouses cluster in unnumbered lanes off Setthathirath Road, because tuk-tuk fares go better when you can show a map, and because ride-hailing here is limited compared with neighbouring capitals. Vientiane has the best mobile network in Laos, which is not a high bar nationally but perfectly good in practice. Expect solid 4G along the Mekong riverfront, around Patuxai and the That Luang stupa and out to the airport, with 5G reaching parts of the city. Congestion is minor by regional standards. Beyond the city the pattern is familiar: the road north to Vang Vieng holds a signal near settlements and loses it on the karst sections, Buddha Park and the riverside road south are covered, and the railway to Luang Prabang alternates between good service in valleys and nothing at all inside its long tunnels. The Thai border is close enough to matter.

Café and guesthouse Wi-Fi along the riverfront is decent in the cooler hours and slows in the evening; a hotspot from the phone is steadier for a laptop. The one quirk that catches people out is the border: Thailand is directly across the Mekong, and near the Friendship Bridge or on the riverfront your phone can register on a Thai network.
