Luang Prabang is now reached two very different ways. Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ) is a short tuk-tuk ride from the peninsula, while the railway station sits some way out of town on the line that runs north to the Chinese border and south towards Vientiane, and a growing number of visitors arrive that way. A third group comes in on the two-day slow boat down the Mekong from Huay Xai, which is a wonderful journey and a long time without a reliable signal. Lao operators sell SIMs in town and at the airport, with passport registration required. An eSIM installed at home over Wi-Fi is live once your handset finds a Lao network, and validity begins at that first connection. Having data on arrival matters most for the railway, where the station transfer and ticket timings are the fiddly part, and for finding a guesthouse in the lanes between the Mekong and the Nam Khan. Laos has a small number of national operators and their networks concentrate on the towns and the main valleys. In Luang Prabang itself, coverage across the peninsula, the night market streets and around Phousi hill is dependable 4G. Coverage weakens as soon as you leave the valley: the road to Kuang Si Falls holds a signal most of the way and thins in the forest around the pools, the Pak Ou caves are workable on the river but poor inside the caverns, and the mountain road towards Nong Khiaw has long quiet stretches. On the Mekong slow boat, expect signal only near riverside villages. The railway south towards Vientiane passes through many long tunnels.

Download Luang Prabang and the whole northern road network offline. Keep data on for messaging, which is how guesthouses, boat operators and drivers arrange everything, and for translation. Guesthouse Wi-Fi on the peninsula is generally decent in the evening and slower when the town fills up; a hotspot is more predictable for a laptop. Bring a power bank sized for a full day out, since Kuang Si and the caves are long trips with no charging. One quirk worth planning for: the railway crosses towards the Chinese border in the north, so if you travel that far your phone may start seeing networks that are not part of your Laos plan.
