Split does something few cities manage: its airport, railway station, bus station and ferry port all funnel into the same small area of waterfront. Split Airport (SPU) is out at Kastela, about twenty-five minutes up the coast, and airport buses run into the Riva; from there the Jadrolinija terminal is a walk away, which is how a great many visitors continue straight to Hvar, Brac or Vis on the same day they land. That tight connection is precisely why a SIM queue hurts. An eSIM installed at home over Wi-Fi is already in the phone and becomes active when it first finds a Croatian network after touchdown, with validity starting at that moment. Live data lets you check whether the catamaran you want has departed, buy or show a ferry ticket, and find an apartment tucked inside the walls of Diocletian's Palace where street numbering is essentially decorative. Coverage in Split is strong on 4G across the Riva, Bacvice, Meje and the harbour approaches, with 5G available in parts of the city. The interesting exception is Diocletian's Palace itself, where Roman-era stone and very narrow lanes weaken the signal and confuse GPS, so expect your blue dot to wander. The Marjan hill above town is well covered and has views to match. Summer congestion peaks in the late afternoon when three catamarans unload at once. Ferries to Brac, Hvar and Solta keep a usable connection for most of the crossing, with weaker patches in mid-channel; the longer run to Vis has real gaps. Inland day trips to Krka, Trogir and Omis stay connected, thinning in the Cetina gorge.

Download Split, the Dalmatian coast and each island you intend to visit before you sail, since offline maps are far more useful than a compass when your GPS is confused inside the palace walls. Keep data on for ferry operators' live timetables, which shift with weather and season, and for translation of konoba menus.
