San Francisco International (SFO) is one of the easier American arrivals because rail is genuinely competitive: BART has a station in the International Terminal and runs directly into downtown, with the AirTrain people mover linking the other terminals. The alternative is an Uber, a Lyft, or in this city a Waymo, where a driverless pickup exists entirely inside an app and cannot be hailed any other way.

US airports have no tourist SIM counters, so a local prepaid line would mean a carrier store downtown after you have already made the journey. BART's underground stations carry mobile coverage; the Transbay Tube under the bay is the notable weak point, where service is unreliable mid-crossing. The hills create small shadowed pockets in places like the Presidio and the western reaches of Golden Gate Park. Beyond the city the day-trip belt is mixed in an honest way: Napa, Berkeley and Silicon Valley are strongly covered, while Muir Woods sits in a valley with famously poor reception, and Highway 1 south towards Big Sur has long stretches with nothing at all.

Download the city plus the coast road south and the Marin headlands offline, because Highway 1 has genuine dead zones and no shortcuts. Data is needed for transit and rideshare apps, restaurant reservations, timed park entries and parking payment, which in San Francisco is almost entirely app-based. Café Wi-Fi is excellent and often the reason to sit down, but public networks are open, so keep account activity on your own connection.
