Arriving in Colombo: airport SIM counters vs eSIM

Sri Lanka's main gateway is Bandaranaike International (CMB) at Katunayake, around thirty kilometres north of Colombo, with the expressway making the run into the city quicker than the distance suggests. The arrivals hall has operator desks selling tourist SIM packages, and they are a genuine institution here — but they involve a passport, a form and a queue that lengthens sharply when several long-haul flights land together in the small hours, which is exactly when most do. Meanwhile the transfer decision is waiting: PickMe is the dominant local ride-hailing app and Uber also operates in Colombo, and both need data before you reach the taxi line. Many visitors also head straight south to Galle or east to Kandy rather than into the capital at all. An eSIM installed on home Wi-Fi is already there when you land, activating on the first network connection and starting its validity only then.

Coverage in Colombo and around

Sri Lanka's operators are Dialog, Mobitel, Hutch and Airtel, and a travel eSIM connects to whichever partner network is strongest rather than one fixed choice. Colombo has dense, fast LTE across Fort, Colombo 3 and 7, Bambalapitiya and the Port City development, and the coastal rail corridor south to Galle is well covered because the line hugs settled shoreline. Congestion shows up at Galle Face Green in the evenings and at Pettah market. Inland is where honesty is needed: the hill country around Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella has service in the towns but loses it in tea-estate valleys and the many rail tunnels on the scenic line, and parts of Yala have none. See the Sri Lanka plan.

Staying connected in Colombo: practical tips

Download offline maps for Colombo plus your onward route — the southern expressway to Galle and the hill roads to Kandy and Ella — because the mountain sections are where the connection actually fails. Data runs the day here: ride-hailing and tuk-tuk apps, train seat availability on the hill line, hotel and homestay directions that are rarely precise, and translation outside the main tourist areas. Hotel and café Wi-Fi in Colombo is good; guesthouse Wi-Fi in the hills is slower and drops during heavy rain. Carry a power bank for long train and safari days. Hotspot works on most plans for laptop use. Confirm your model on the devices page before flying.

Colombo eSIM FAQ

Do I need to queue for a SIM at Colombo airport?

Not if you arrive with an eSIM already installed. It activates the moment your phone finds a Sri Lankan network after landing, so you can book a ride and message your hotel while others are still in the counter queue, which is longest during the early-morning arrival bank.

Will the eSIM work on the train to Kandy and Ella?

In parts. The plan covers the whole country and the stations and larger towns have service, but the hill line runs through many tunnels and deep tea-estate valleys where signal drops for long stretches. Download your ticket and map before boarding.

Do I need a local number for PickMe or Uber?

No. Both apps work on your existing account over data. Keep your home SIM active so verification codes and driver calls can still reach you if needed, and use the data-only eSIM for booking, tracking and in-app messaging with your driver.

Is coverage good on the way to Galle?

Yes. The southern expressway and the coastal road are well covered, as are Galle Fort, Unawatuna and the main beach towns. Signal thins slightly on the quieter stretches between resorts and inland from the coast towards the rubber and cinnamon country.

Will it work on a safari at Yala?

Partly. The gate areas and nearby towns have service, but large parts of the park interior have no coverage. Agree meeting arrangements with your driver in advance, download offline maps, and treat any connection inside the park as unreliable rather than assumed.
