The arrivals hall has operator desks selling tourist SIM packages, and they are a genuine institution here — but they involve a passport, a form and a queue that lengthens sharply when several long-haul flights land together in the small hours, which is exactly when most do. Meanwhile the transfer decision is waiting: PickMe is the dominant local ride-hailing app and Uber also operates in Colombo, and both need data before you reach the taxi line. Many visitors also head straight south to Galle or east to Kandy rather than into the capital at all. An eSIM installed on home Wi-Fi is already there when you land, activating on the first network connection and starting its validity only then.

Sri Lanka's operators are Dialog, Mobitel, Hutch and Airtel, and a travel eSIM connects to whichever partner network is strongest rather than one fixed choice. Colombo has dense, fast LTE across Fort, Colombo 3 and 7, Bambalapitiya and the Port City development, and the coastal rail corridor south to Galle is well covered because the line hugs settled shoreline. Congestion shows up at Galle Face Green in the evenings and at Pettah market. Inland is where honesty is needed: the hill country around Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella has service in the towns but loses it in tea-estate valleys and the many rail tunnels on the scenic line, and parts of Yala have none.
