Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) is 16 kilometres north of the city at Otopeni, and it has a rail link running to Gara de Nord as well as the 783 express bus into Piața Unirii. Operator shops in the terminal sell prepaid packs, but the registration formalities and the hours they keep sit badly with a schedule dominated by early-morning and late-night flights.

Romania is a country where being offline feels particularly absurd, because the fixed and mobile internet here is genuinely excellent and everyone around you is using it. Bolt and Uber both operate in Bucharest and are the default way in for most arrivals; the rail link needs a ticket you will want to check; and the metro map is not intuitive on a first visit. All of that is easier with a connection you already have when the doors open.

Orange, Vodafone and Digi all run strong networks, and Bucharest is a fast 5G city: the centre, the Old Town, Herăstrău and the office districts along Pipera are comfortably covered, with high-speed 4G everywhere else.

The metro carries service through stations and tunnels across the network, including the long north-south runs, so you can keep navigating below ground. Congestion is noticeable in the Old Town at weekends and around Piața Victoriei at rush hour. Out of the city, the Prahova valley towards Sinaia and Brașov holds signal along the main road and railway, dropping in the tighter mountain sections and on the Bucegi plateau. Coverage into the Danube Delta is genuinely patchy once you leave Tulcea by boat.

Download offline maps for the centre plus the mountain route if Sinaia, Peleș or Bran is on your list, since valley tunnels and passes interrupt live navigation. Ride-hailing, contactless transport ticketing and restaurant bookings are the daily data draws.

Wi-Fi in Bucharest cafés, hotels and even public squares is unusually good, so you may use less data than expected, but the eSIM covers the metro, the walk and the drive.
