Krakow has one of the tidiest airport-to-city links in Europe: a covered walkway from the terminal at John Paul II International Airport (KRK) leads to a railway platform, and the train reaches Krakow Glowny in around twenty minutes. That convenience is exactly why a SIM queue is such a waste of time here, and Polish prepaid numbers require registration, so the transaction is not quick. An eSIM installed at home over Wi-Fi is already waiting; it activates when your handset first registers on a Polish network after landing, and the validity clock starts then rather than when you bought it. Live data on the platform lets you buy the train ticket, confirm which side of the Planty your apartment is on, and open Bolt or Uber if the weather has turned. Krakow's centre is compact and walkable, and its addresses hide behind courtyards and archways, so a map that updates as you turn is worth more than a printed one. Krakow is comprehensively covered by Poland's four national operators, with dense 4G across the Old Town, Kazimierz, Podgorze and the outer estates, and 5G available in much of the central area. There is no metro here, so trams and buses at street level keep a normal connection throughout. Expect congestion in the Rynek Glowny on summer evenings and in the Kazimierz bar streets at weekends. The two headline day trips behave differently: Auschwitz-Birkenau and Oswiecim are well covered above ground, while the Wieliczka salt mine is a hundred metres below the surface with no usable signal on the tour route. South towards the Tatras and Zakopane, coverage weakens on the higher valleys.

Download Krakow and the Zakopane road offline, and save your Wieliczka and Auschwitz tickets to your phone before you set off, because the mine tour runs deep underground and the memorial site asks you to keep phone use minimal. Keep data live for the tram app, for ride-hailing and for translation of Polish-only menus in the milk bars. Café Wi-Fi in the Old Town is good but heavily shared in high season, so hotspot from your phone for anything that matters. Contactless cards work everywhere.
