Marrakech Menara (RAK) is close enough to the city that the drive takes only minutes, which is both convenient and the reason many arrivals do not bother sorting out data until they are already lost. Operator counters in the arrivals hall sell tourist SIMs and want your passport, and the wait varies wildly depending on whether a bank of European charter flights has just landed.

Heetch and inDrive both operate in Marrakech, and there are metered taxis outside the terminal, but the medina is the real challenge: cars cannot enter most of it, riad entrances are unmarked doors in blank walls, and your driver will stop at the nearest gate and point. That is a moment when a live map and a working messaging app to your riad are worth a great deal. An eSIM installed at home over Wi-Fi is already live by then, since the profile activates when your phone first registers on a Moroccan network and validity starts at that connection.

Morocco's networks are Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc and Inwi, and your plan connects to a partner and follows the strongest signal. Across Marrakech, from Gueliz and Hivernage to the medina and the Palmeraie, 4G is fast and dependable and remains the workhorse; 5G has been arriving in Morocco's larger cities, so newer handsets may see it in parts of town. Inside the medina, the walls and narrow lanes weaken signal in places even though the towers are close. Day trips vary sharply: the Ourika valley and the Agafay desert keep 4G, the road to Essaouira is covered, but the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the Imlil valley and the High Atlas villages beyond have long quiet stretches.

Download an offline map of the medina specifically, and expect it to be imperfect: the lanes are unnamed, they change width and direction constantly, and GPS bounces between high walls. Save your riad as a pin and photograph the door. Keep data for Heetch and inDrive, translation and hammam or excursion bookings, which are usually confirmed by messaging app. Riad Wi-Fi is common but weak in rooms far from the courtyard, and cafe Wi-Fi in Gueliz is much better. A hotspot handles a laptop. Two notes: heat and constant map use flatten a phone by mid-afternoon, so carry a power bank, and mountain excursions leave you offline for hours.
