Macao catches people out because it is not covered by the plan they already bought. It is a separate special administrative region with its own networks, so a mainland China plan or a Hong Kong plan will not necessarily include it, and travellers discover this at the ferry terminal or halfway across the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge when the phone stops working.

The stay is usually short and dense. People come for a night or two of Cotai hotels, the Portuguese lanes around Senado Square, the egg tarts in Taipa Village and a day trip in from Hong Kong. In that compressed a schedule, everything depends on live data: shuttle bus times between casino resorts, restaurant queues, ferry sailings and the walk between the historic centre and the waterfront. Buy short. A great many Macao visits are one to three days, often bolted onto a Hong Kong trip, so the duration matters far more than the size. The networks that exist in Macao are CTM, China Telecom Macau and SmarTone Macau. Macao is small and intensely built up, so coverage is excellent almost everywhere, including inside the casino resorts, the pedestrian tunnels and the bridges linking the peninsula to Taipa and Cotai. 5G is available in the built-up areas. The practical weak spots are not geographic but structural: deep inside some basement levels and car parks, and briefly in the middle of the sea crossings on the ferry to Hong Kong.
