Osaka's international gateway, Kansai International (KIX), sits on an artificial island in the bay, connected to the mainland by a single bridge. Two rail operators run in from there: the Nankai line to Namba and the JR Haruka limited express to Tennoji, Shin-Osaka and onward to Kyoto. Domestic flights use Itami (ITM), much closer to the north of the city. Prepaid data SIMs are sold from counters and vending machines in the Kansai arrivals hall, but the machines run empty at busy hours and the swap costs you your home SIM slot. The decision you need to make immediately is which train and which reserved seat, and that is a screen decision. An eSIM installed on Wi-Fi before you fly is simply already in place, dormant until your phone finds a Japanese network on landing. Validity begins at that first connection, which also means an early purchase carries no penalty.

The Osaka Metro tunnels, including the busy Midosuji line, carry signal. Beyond the city, the Kansai day-trip belt is well served: Nara, Kobe, Himeji and the coastal rail lines all hold up. The clear exception is Koyasan, where the cable-car ascent and the forested temple valleys on the mountain lose service in places. All on the Japan plan, alongside Kyoto.

Cache offline maps of Umeda and Namba specifically — the underground arcades beneath both are vast, multi-level and famously disorienting, and a dropped connection there is genuinely inconvenient. Data matters for rail routing apps across three competing operators, for mobile IC card top-ups at the gates, for restaurant queue tickets in Dotonbori and for camera translation of handwritten menus. Hotel Wi-Fi is reliable; station and convenience store Wi-Fi is slow and gated. Hotspot works on most plans if you are working from the hotel.
