Kyoto has no airport of its own, so arrival is always a transfer. Most international visitors land at Kansai International (KIX) and take the JR Haruka limited express straight to Kyoto Station in a little over an hour; others come in on the Shinkansen from Tokyo or fly into Itami (ITM) and take a bus. That means the SIM counters you see in the Kansai arrivals hall are a decision made under time pressure with a train to catch, and the vending machines there are often picked clean by mid-afternoon. It is far easier to install an eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, leave it dormant, and let it register on a Japanese network the first time your phone searches after landing, with validity starting from that connection. That way you reach Kyoto Station already able to work out the buses, which is the part that catches people out: Kyoto has only two subway lines, and the city really runs on its bus network.

NTT Docomo, KDDI au, SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile all serve Kyoto, with the eSIM roaming to the strongest partner signal. 5G is present across the city centre, around Kyoto Station, Kawaramachi and Gion, and LTE is fast throughout the flat basin where most temples sit. The Karasuma and Tozai subway tunnels carry coverage. Kyoto's quirk is topography rather than density: the city is ringed by wooded hills, and the temple districts climb into them. Signal weakens on the upper paths behind Fushimi Inari, in the bamboo groves at Arashiyama, and on the Kurama to Kibune walk over the northern ridge. Ohara and the mountain roads north thin out too. Download offline maps that include the bus network, not just walking routes — Kyoto's buses are the practical way to reach the western and northern temples, and stop names in the hills are easy to miss. Data matters for bus and rail routing apps, mobile IC card top-ups at gates, temple entry information that changes with the seasons, and camera translation of signage. Machiya guesthouse Wi-Fi is generally good but thick old walls block it in inner rooms. Carry a power bank on temple days, which are long, hot in summer and heavy on photography.
