No other Italian city makes the first hour as dependent on a phone as Venice does. Most flights land at Marco Polo (VCE) on the mainland edge of the lagoon, with some low-cost services at Treviso (TSF) an hour away by bus, and many travellers arrive instead by train at Venezia Santa Lucia. Retail SIM counters mean a queue and an identity check. An eSIM installed at home on Wi-Fi is live as soon as your phone finds an Italian network on landing, with validity starting from that connection.

From Marco Polo you choose between the Alilaguna water bus straight across the lagoon to San Marco or the Rialto, an ATVO or ACTV bus to Piazzale Roma, or a private water taxi. Beyond Piazzale Roma there are no cars at all: it is vaporetto and walking. Open-water stretches on the way to the outer lagoon and the quieter northern islands can dip, and dense stone alleys in Cannaregio and Castello can give one bar where the next street gives five.

Venice navigation is a matter of bridges and dead-end calli, and a slow-loading map is useless when you are dragging a suitcase. Hotel Wi-Fi in old buildings with thick walls is often weak away from the lobby, and café Wi-Fi is inconsistent. A phone hotspot is the more dependable option for a laptop and works on most plans. Two local notes: high-water days push everyone onto raised walkways and phone use goes up sharply, so carry a power bank; and a phone dropped in a canal is gone, so use a wrist strap.
