Arriving in Milan: airport SIM counters vs eSIM
Milan is a three-airport city, and which one you land at changes your first hour completely. Malpensa (MXP) is the long-haul gateway with T1 and T2, Linate (LIN) sits close to the city, and Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) is an hour away by coach despite what a booking site may imply. Telecom counters exist at Malpensa but they are slow and an Italian prepaid line means registration with documents. From Malpensa the Malpensa Express runs to Cadorna and Centrale, and coaches serve all three airports. Milan is the best-connected city in Italy, served by TIM, Vodafone, WINDTRE and Iliad, with dense 5G across the centre, Porta Nuova, CityLife and the Navigli, and consistent 4G in the wider metropolitan area. The metro lines M1 through M5 carry coverage in stations and most tunnels, and the suburban Passante lines are covered too.
Congestion appears in predictable places: fashion week venues, trade fairs at Rho Fiera and San Siro on a match night. On day trips, Bergamo, Como town, Monza and Pavia are well served. Signal thins on the upper reaches of Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, in the mountain villages above them, and in Alpine valleys towards the Swiss border.
Staying connected in Milan: practical tips
Download offline maps for Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, because the lakeside roads tunnel through rock and coverage arrives in bursts. In the city, data drives the ATM transport app, restaurant bookings, and ticketing for Santa Maria delle Grazie, which must be reserved in advance.
Hotel Wi-Fi is generally decent, and café connections in Porta Romana and Isola beat most Italian cities. For a laptop the phone hotspot is still the fastest fix and works on most plans. Two local notes: if you take the train north towards Lugano your phone can register on a Swiss network as you cross, which falls outside an Italy-only plan, so keep an eye on it; and long trade-fair days need a power bank.

Yes. Stations and most tunnel sections on lines M1 to M5 carry mobile coverage, including the M4 route out to Linate airport. Brief drop-outs between stations are possible, so download your route if you are making a tight connection with luggage.
Is 5G available in Milan?

Will it keep working on a day trip to Lake Como?
