Santorini has two very different arrival stories. Flights land at the compact Santorini (Thira) National Airport (JTR), where a single small terminal empties onto a car park and the retail options are minimal. Ferries dock at Athinios, a working port at the base of a steep switchback road, where hundreds of passengers, drivers and hire car agents converge in the minutes after a boat opens its ramp. Neither is a place to hunt for a SIM card. An eSIM installed at home on Wi-Fi is already there, waking when your phone registers on a Greek network as you land or dock, with validity starting at that moment.

Data turns Athinios from chaos into a process: finding your named driver, confirming a hire car, or checking whether the KTEL bus to Fira is running. There is no rail, and buses hub through Fira. Two honest caveats. The first is congestion: at sunset in Oia thousands of people crowd a few narrow lanes and all are uploading, so speeds collapse for an hour or two. The second is water. The crossings to and from Piraeus, Crete and the other Cyclades lose signal mid-route, and the boat trip to the Nea Kameni volcano and Thirassia can be patchy in places.

Download the island offline, including the caldera footpath from Fira to Oia. That walk crosses open ground where you will want a map and a camera, and a slow signal is exactly the problem there. Cave hotel Wi-Fi is good in the room and poor on the terrace, and café Wi-Fi is variable. Hotspot from the phone works on most plans.
