Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) sits well east of the city, and the single best thing about it is that Metro line 3 runs directly from the terminal to Syntagma and Monastiraki and now continues through to Piraeus. Suburban rail also links the airport to the wider network. Greek prepaid SIMs require registration with identity documents, and after an evening arrival the shops may be shut. An eSIM installed at home on Wi-Fi avoids that entirely: it activates when your phone first registers on a Greek network after landing, and validity begins from that connection.

For many visitors Athens is a transit point to the islands, which makes the airport-to-Piraeus link the real journey.
