Cairo International (CAI) spreads across several terminals in the north-east of a city of enormous size, and the transfer into Zamalek, Downtown or Giza can take anywhere from forty minutes to well over ninety depending on the hour. This is a place where arriving connected changes the experience materially. Uber and Careem both operate across Cairo and are the calmest way to leave the airport, since the fare is agreed in the app rather than at the kerb. Operator counters in arrivals do sell tourist SIMs, but registration is passport-based and the queues after a bank of night arrivals are slow. An eSIM installed at home over Wi-Fi removes the negotiation entirely: dormant in the phone, it registers on an Egyptian network the first time the handset searches after landing, and validity starts at that connection. Download offline maps of Greater Cairo including Giza, since addresses are approximate and drivers often navigate by landmark rather than street. Data matters for ride-hailing, museum and site tickets increasingly sold online, translation, and train bookings to Alexandria or Aswan. Hotel Wi-Fi is generally reliable; café Wi-Fi varies and can be slow in the evenings. One practical note: some internet voice and video calling services behave inconsistently over mobile networks in Egypt, so keep messaging as your primary channel and avoid planning a critical video call around mobile data.
