Sofia Airport (SOF) has two terminals a shuttle ride apart, and the useful detail for arrivals is that the metro comes to you: a station sits at Terminal 2, putting the city centre a straightforward ride away without touching a taxi rank. Terminal 1 passengers take the free inter-terminal shuttle first. Prepaid SIM stands exist in arrivals, but they keep retail hours and the registration paperwork is an odd way to spend the first twenty minutes of a trip.

Data matters before you reach the platform. You need to buy the right metro ticket, know which of the interchange stations your hotel is nearest, and in many cases order a Bolt instead because your accommodation is up in Lozenets rather than near a line. Late arrivals miss the last train and the taxi decision becomes the whole evening.

Congestion is mostly a summer-evening phenomenon on the pedestrian boulevard. Around the city, the mountain immediately south is the honest weak point: the lower Vitosha slopes and Boyana church area are fine, while the ridge trails and the deep valleys towards Rila Monastery and Borovets drop in and out. The motorway to Plovdiv stays connected throughout.

Download offline maps for central Sofia plus Vitosha if you are hiking, because trail junctions are poorly signed and signal is unreliable above the tree line. Metro ticketing, ride-hailing and translation of Cyrillic menus are the everyday data users.

Café Wi-Fi is widespread and quick, and many Sofia cafés are comfortable places to work, but the eSIM covers the walk, the tram and the mountain lift. Hotspot for a laptop is supported on most plans. A power bank is worth carrying on hiking days when you are navigating and photographing at altitude in the cold.
