Almost every visitor reaches Baku through Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD), a short drive north-east of the centre. Operator kiosks sit in the arrivals area, but a local prepaid line in Azerbaijan is a registration exercise: passport details, paperwork and a wait that lands when you would rather be moving. An eSIM bought before departure sidesteps all of it. Install it on hotel or home Wi-Fi, keep it switched off, and it activates the first time your phone registers on an Azerbaijani network on the taxiway, with validity counting from that first connection.

That matters because the ride into town is where you need data. Bolt is the app most travellers use for airport pickups, and the H1 airport bus runs to 28 May station on the metro. With data live you can compare the bus, the app and the official airport taxi rank before you leave the terminal, and share a live location with whoever is waiting in Icherisheher. Azerbaijan's networks are Azercell, Bakcell and Nar, and your eSIM latches onto whichever partner network is strongest rather than committing you to one. Central Baku, the Boulevard, the Flame Towers district and the reclaimed waterfront around White City all sit on solid 4G, with 5G present in parts of the city. The Baku Metro is short and modern, and while trains hold signal in most stations, expect gaps in the deeper tunnels between them.

Out on the Absheron peninsula, Sumgait and the road to Gobustan, coverage stays usable. It thins in the mud-volcano fields beyond the petroglyph reserve and on mountain approaches towards Shamakhi, Lahij and the Quba highlands, where a signal drop of several kilometres is normal.

Download an offline map covering Baku, the Absheron ring road and the Gobustan corridor before you go, because the stretch past Alat is where navigation apps go quiet. Data makes the trip work: ride-hailing, translation between Azerbaijani, Russian and English, and museum bookings all need it. Café and hotel Wi-Fi in the centre is fine, but hotspot from your phone for a laptop outside town.

Two quirks to plan around. Some voice-over-IP calling apps behave inconsistently on Azerbaijani networks, so treat messaging as your reliable channel. And on the Georgian border road towards Balakan your phone can latch onto a Georgian network, which sits outside an Azerbaijan-only plan. Carry a power bank for long Gobustan and Quba days.
