Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) sits close enough to Yerevan that you can be on Republic Square before a SIM registration would have finished. Armenian operators run kiosks in the arrivals hall and they are usually open, but the process still means a passport scan, a registered number and a wait, and Zvartnots takes a heavy cluster of late-night flights that all land within the same hour. Installing an eSIM at home over Wi-Fi removes that from the schedule completely: the profile sits dormant until your handset finds an Armenian network after landing, and only then does the validity period begin. Armenia has three national mobile operators and Yerevan is thoroughly covered by all of them, with 4G the default across Kentron, Kond, Cascade and the outer districts and 5G present in parts of the centre. The single metro line is short and coverage behaves much like elsewhere: fine at platforms, unreliable in the tunnels. Coverage is genuinely good on the main day-trip routes, so Garni, Geghard, Echmiadzin and the shores of Lake Sevan stay usable. It thins in the gorges below Garni, on the switchbacks towards Dilijan and around the Tatev cable car, where the valley walls do most of the blocking. Mountain passes in winter can drop out entirely.

Download Yerevan plus a wide band covering Sevan, Dilijan and the Vayots Dzor road, because the scenic detours are precisely where the network gives up. Keep data on for ride-hailing, for translating Armenian script menus and signage with a camera translator, and for the messaging apps that most guides and drivers prefer to phone calls. Café Wi-Fi in Yerevan is plentiful and fast, though hotspot from the phone is steadier if you are moving between venues with a laptop. If you drive south towards the border regions, expect your phone to occasionally reach for a neighbouring country network; keep roaming behaviour in mind and stick to the main routes.
