Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA) is the country's only major airport, which makes it the arrival point for almost every visitor whether they are staying in the capital or heading straight for the coast. It is a single compact terminal about 17 kilometres north-west of the city. Prepaid SIM counters operate landside, but opening hours do not match the late-night low-cost arrivals that fill much of the schedule, and registration takes a passport and a form.

Once outside, the Rinas Express bus runs into the centre near Skanderbeg Square, and Bolt is widely used in Tirana for short hops. Many arrivals, though, are picking up a hire car and driving south the same evening, and that is precisely when you want live navigation, a confirmed hotel pin in Durrës or Berat, and the ability to tell someone you are running late.

Vodafone Albania and One Albania are the operators you will meet, and both deliver good 4G across Tirana and the coastal plain. LTE is the workhorse; 5G is newer and best treated as an occasional bonus in central Tirana rather than something to plan around.

The capital has no metro, so coverage is a surface affair, strong around Blloku, the Pyramid and the Grand Park and dipping only in older concrete stairwells. Congestion shows on summer evenings in the pedestrian centre. Beyond the city the picture changes with terrain: Durrës, Krujë and Berat are fine, the coastal road holds signal, and the Llogara pass and the approach to Theth have long stretches with nothing at all.

Download offline maps for Tirana and the entire stretch of road you intend to drive, because Albanian mountain routes lose service for tens of kilometres and rerouting around roadworks is common. Save your accommodation pins as well, since rural guesthouses are often unaddressed.

Café Wi-Fi in Tirana is plentiful and fast, and Albanians live in their cafés, so the connection you need is really for the gaps in between and for the road. Hotspot for a laptop works on most plans. Carry a power bank for driving days, when the phone doubles as satnav and camera for eight hours. Note that an Albania plan stops at the border, so a hop to a neighbouring country needs its own plan.
