A Uganda trip is usually a safari itinerary written in advance and then run by phone: the Entebbe (EBB) pickup, the drive to Kampala or straight west, permit confirmations for gorilla trekking in Bwindi, lodge check-ins at Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls. Uganda also enforces SIM registration, so buying a local prepaid line as a visitor means producing your passport and completing paperwork before the SIM works — not what you want at the end of a long flight. It also travels with you on the long road days between parks.

MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda dominate, and between them they cover Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja, Mbarara and the main tarmac roads well, generally on 4G, with 5G limited to parts of the capital. On safari the picture is uneven by design: Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls have signal around gates, lodges and larger settlements and little in between, and the forested hills around Bwindi and Kisoro create real dead zones. Lodges in those areas often rely on satellite Wi-Fi rather than mobile.

A local MTN or Airtel SIM is inexpensive but requires passport registration and a visit to an accredited agent, which costs you the first afternoon. Home-carrier roaming in East Africa is typically priced per day at a level that quickly exceeds the value of a fortnight's plan. For a one- or two-week safari the eSIM wins on time alone; a local line makes more sense for a long research or NGO posting.
