Poland catches travellers out on distance. Warsaw to Kraków to Gdańsk is a lot of country, most of it covered by train, and the days are shaped by things you look up as you go: which PKP Intercity service actually has seats, what time the Auschwitz-Birkenau tour slots open, whether the Tatra trails above Zakopane are passable this week.
