Samoa runs on two main islands — Upolu, where Apia and Faleolo International Airport (APW) are, and larger, quieter Savai'i across the strait — and the ferry between them is the sort of journey where a live timetable and a working phone are genuinely useful. Visitors here tend to be doing something specific: staying in beach fales along the south coast, walking to the To Sua ocean trench and the waterfalls, or visiting family. Fale accommodation is deliberately simple, and Wi-Fi ranges from good to nonexistent. Installing an eSIM at home means you arrive with data already sorted after what is usually a long Pacific flight, and your home SIM stays in place for bank codes and calls.

Samoa is served by two mobile operators, and coverage is concentrated where people live: Apia and the northern coast of Upolu are well covered, as is the road that rings the island past Lalomanu and the south-coast beaches. Savai'i has service around Salelologa and the main coastal road, with weaker patches inland. The mountainous interior of both islands, the lava fields and the higher rainforest trails are effectively offline. On the Upolu–Savai'i ferry you will usually keep signal for most of the crossing, but download offline maps before setting out anyway.

A local prepaid SIM bought in Apia is a reasonable choice for a long stay, though the shops keep local hours and the airport arrival is often late at night. Roaming into the South Pacific on a home tariff is one of the more punishing lines on any price list. For a one- or two-week trip around Upolu and Savai'i, a travel eSIM installed before you leave is easier and keeps your own number reachable throughout.
