Best eSIM for Hungary

Budapest rewards wandering, which is exactly why the phone matters. Half the day is spent working out which tram runs along the Danube embankment, which ruin bar in District VII is worth the walk, and whether the queue at Széchenyi thermal baths has died down yet — all of it live, none of it printable in advance. Hungarian prepaid SIMs are sold with a registration step, so the counter at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) takes longer than the sign suggests. Most visitors give Hungary four or five days, nearly all of it in Budapest, sometimes with a night at Lake Balaton or in Eger's wine cellars. That is a moderate data load — maps, translation, ticket apps, photo uploads — so choose from the smaller and mid-sized plans above rather than the largest. Magyar Telekom, Yettel and One all operate 5G in Budapest and the bigger regional cities, so a 5G-capable plan is worth it on a modern handset, though Hungary's 4G is more than adequate. Hungary's networks are Magyar Telekom, Yettel and One, and your eSIM attaches to a partner and moves to the strongest signal available. The country is flat and compact, which helps: coverage is consistent across the Great Plain, along the M-numbered motorways and on the MÁV rail lines, and the Budapest metro carries signal underground including on the historic M1 line. Weak spots are few — the Bükk and Mátra hills in the north-east, and some Danube Bend riverside stretches below the cliffs.

• Lake Balaton — reliable in Siófok and Tihany, thinner on the water itself.
• Eger and Tokaj — good in the towns, patchy down in the cellar rows.

The registration requirement is what tips this one. For a short Budapest trip the eSIM saves both the queue and the paperwork, and costs less than a roaming pack for the same days. Buy a Hungarian SIM only if you are staying weeks and want a local number people can ring.

2. iPhone on iOS 17.4 or later: tap the install link. Otherwise go to Settings › Mobile Data › Add eSIM and scan.
3. Android: Settings › Connections or Network › SIM manager › Add eSIM › scan the QR, or enter the SM-DP+ code manually.
4. Label the profile Hungary so it is clear which line is which.
5. Turn Data Roaming on for the eSIM line and turn mobile data off on your home SIM.

7. Validity starts at that first connection on a Hungarian network.

Install it a few days early while you are on Wi-Fi at home, then leave the line switched off until you are on the ground in Hungary. Nothing starts ticking until the eSIM first connects there.
