The queue at Kotoka International (ACC) tells you what a Ghana trip is like: conference delegates, families visiting relatives in Kumasi, and people here for a fortnight who need to be reachable from the first hour. Ghanaian SIM cards are registered against the Ghana Card, and visitors are pushed towards a slower manual process, which is a poor use of the first afternoon in Accra. An eSIM removes the step. You install it before you fly and it finds a network while you are still waiting for the bags. Data matters more than a local number here: taxis are booked through apps, the drive to Cape Coast or Kakum needs live maps because the road signs are sparse, and mobile money and delivery services all sit behind a connection.

Ghana trips tend to run one to three weeks and cover more ground than people expect, usually Accra plus a run along the coast to Cape Coast and Elmina, or north to Kumasi. That means a lot of navigation, so pick a plan sized for continuous map use rather than for occasional messaging. If you are here for a conference or a work placement, add streaming and video calls home to the estimate. Hotspot is worth confirming on the plan card if you travel with a laptop, since guesthouse Wi-Fi along the coast is often a single shared line. You do not need a Ghanaian number for the apps you already use, because your home SIM stays in the phone for one-time passwords. The networks operating in Ghana are MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana and AirtelTigo, and your eSIM attaches to a partner among them and moves between masts on its own. 4G is the practical standard in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Takoradi, and it holds up well along the main coastal highway.
