Best eSIM for Finland

Two very different trips share this country. One is a summer city stay of a few days in Helsinki with a ferry to Suomenlinna and maybe Tallinn; the other is a Lapland winter week where the phone is doing real work, tracking aurora forecasts, husky pickup times and the temperature you are about to walk into.

Both need data from the moment you arrive. Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL) is a fast, efficient airport where you can be on a train to the centre within twenty minutes of clearing the gate, which is exactly the window in which hunting for a SIM kiosk goes wrong. Finnish public transport, museum entry and restaurant bookings all assume a connected phone. Installing an eSIM at home means the HSL journey planner is already running when you reach the platform.

Match the plan to which Finland you are visiting. A Helsinki city break of three or four days is light on data: maps, tram times, a few bookings. A Lapland trip in Rovaniemi, Levi or Saariselkä runs longer and heavier, because you will be checking aurora and weather apps repeatedly and sending a lot of photos and video home. Where it thins is on the forest roads between towns, on the frozen lakes and snowmobile trails, and in parts of the archipelago south-west of Turku. Cold drains battery fast in winter, which matters more than signal.
