Best eSIM for Ecuador

An Ecuador itinerary tends to change altitude fast: Quito at nearly 2,800 metres, then Cotopaxi or the Quilotoa loop, then down to Guayaquil or out to the Galápagos. Every one of those legs runs on your phone – bus times, altitude-friendly plans, guides on WhatsApp, and the ride-hailing apps that most visitors use in Quito and Guayaquil. Arrivals come through Mariscal Sucre (UIO) or José Joaquín de Olmedo (GYE). A travel eSIM lets you skip the arrivals-hall SIM counters entirely: install it on Wi-Fi before you fly, keep your own number active for OTPs, and let the validity start only when it first connects in Ecuador.

Claro, Movistar and CNT are the operators here, and 4G is solid across Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, Ambato and Manta with 5G present in parts of the largest cities. The Andean valleys, the Quilotoa rim and the road down into the Oriente lose signal regularly, and Amazon lodges around Tena and Coca are effectively offline. Galápagos service exists in Puerto Ayora and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, not on the boats between islands.

Local SIMs from Claro or Movistar are cheap for long stays and give you an Ecuadorian number, which helps if you are booking a lot by phone. For a two or three-week trip, an eSIM is simpler: no counter, no registration, and your home number stays reachable. Roaming from Europe or Asia is the expensive default. If Peru or Colombia is on the same trip, look at the South America bundle.
