Unlike the south, Hanoi puts real distance between the runway and the city. Noi Bai International (HAN) is roughly thirty kilometres north of the centre, split between a domestic and an international terminal, and the transfer across the Red River takes a good forty minutes in traffic. That drive is precisely when you want data — to confirm a fare in Grab, Be or Xanh SM, to send your hotel a location pin, or to check that the address in the Old Quarter is the one you actually booked. Airport SIM counters exist in arrivals and will register a tourist line against your passport, but the queue after a wave of arrivals is long and you lose your home SIM slot in the process. Installing an eSIM at home over Wi-Fi removes that step entirely: it stays inactive until your phone finds a Vietnamese network after landing, and only then does the validity period begin. Café Wi-Fi in Hanoi is excellent and free almost everywhere, but it will not help on a motorbike or in a taxi. Carry a power bank on Ha Long and Ninh Binh days, which are long and screen-heavy.
