Hamad International (DOH) is one of the easier arrivals anywhere, and its best feature for a new visitor is the Doha Metro Red Line, which runs directly from a station at the airport into the city, through Msheireb and up towards Lusail. That is a decision you want to make with a live map rather than a wall sign, especially if your hotel sits along the West Bay corniche. Karwa taxis wait outside and Uber operates in Doha as well, both easier to use with data in hand. Operator counters sell tourist SIMs in arrivals, but registration takes a passport and time, and a stopover traveller with a few hours in Qatar has little to spare. An eSIM installed at home over Wi-Fi is the cleaner option: it does nothing until your handset registers on a Qatari network after landing, and the validity clock starts precisely then, which suits short layovers well.

Qatar's operators are Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar, and a travel eSIM roams onto the stronger partner signal automatically. Doha has some of the most consistent 5G in the region: it reaches West Bay, the Corniche, Msheireb, Education City and Lusail, with fast LTE as fallback. The metro tunnels carry signal, so all three lines stay connected underground. Souq Waqif and the malls are well served indoors. Outside the city the picture changes with emptiness rather than terrain: the road north to Al Zubarah is covered, while the dune country around Khor Al Adaid has gaps once you leave the graded track. Everything runs on the Qatar plan, part of the Middle East.

Download offline maps of central Doha and, more usefully, of the desert route to the inland sea if you are taking a dune trip, since that is the one place coverage genuinely fails. Data matters for metro and tram journey planning, museum and stadium tickets held on the phone, ride-hailing, and translation in the souq. Hotel and mall Wi-Fi is fast, and airport Wi-Fi is good if you are transiting. Note that some voice and video calling apps behave inconsistently over mobile data in parts of the Gulf, so plan around messaging rather than assuming a video call will connect.
