Muscat International (MCT) sits at the western end of a city that stretches for forty kilometres along the coast, which is the first thing to understand about arriving in Oman: your hotel could be ten minutes away in Al Khuwair or an hour away in Old Muscat, and the fare difference is significant. There is no metro or airport rail here, so the choice is an airport taxi from the rank, a hotel car, a rental with its own app check-in, or Careem, which operates in Muscat. All of them work better when you can see a map. Operator kiosks in arrivals do sell tourist SIMs against a passport, with the usual form-filling. An eSIM installed at home over Wi-Fi skips that: it waits inertly in the phone and comes to life when the handset registers on an Omani network after landing, starting its validity then. If you are driving on to Nizwa or Sur the same evening, that head start matters more still.

Omantel, Ooredoo Oman and Vodafone Oman cover the country, and a travel eSIM roams to the strongest partner network rather than one operator. Muscat has good 5G across Al Khuwair, Qurum and the marina districts, with solid LTE along the coastal ribbon out to Muttrah. Away from the capital, Oman's coverage follows the road network faithfully and the mountains do the rest. The dual carriageway to Nizwa and Sur stays connected, as do the towns themselves. What drops is vertical and narrow: the switchbacks up Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams, the canyon floors of Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid, and the dunes of the Wahiba Sands away from camps. Download offline maps of the whole northern region before setting out, not just Muscat — Omani road trips are long, and the wadi turn-offs are unsigned gravel tracks where a live map is exactly what you lose. Data matters for ride-hailing, fort and museum opening times that shift with the season and Friday prayers, hotel directions along the strung-out coast, and translation outside the capital. Hotel Wi-Fi is good; roadside coverage in the interior is not something to plan around. Carry a power bank and a car charger: navigation on a hot day with the screen at full brightness empties a phone quickly. Hotspot works on most plans. Check the compatibility list before travel.
