Operator stands in and around arrivals will sell a local prepaid line, but Nigerian SIM registration is tied to the national identity number system and requires biometric capture, which is slow at the best of times and genuinely awkward for a short-stay visitor.

Meanwhile the transfer is the hard part of any Lagos arrival. Uber, Bolt and inDrive all operate in the city and are the usual way into Ikeja, or across the bridges to Victoria Island and Lekki. Fares and pickup points shift with traffic, drivers call to renegotiate meeting spots, and the difference between an hour and three hours on the Third Mainland Bridge is information you want live.

MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile all cover Lagos, and 5G is genuinely available across the commercial cores, strongest on Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki Phase 1 and around Ikeja. Elsewhere the city runs on 4G that is fast when the cell is not overloaded.

Congestion is the defining local issue rather than absence of coverage: at rush hour on the bridges, around Balogun market and inside big church and event crowds, bars stay full while throughput collapses. The Blue and Red Line rail corridors are covered along their routes. Heading out to Badagry in the west or Epe and the Lekki free zone in the east, coverage follows the expressways and thins on the creek roads and around the lagoon jetties.

Download offline maps covering the mainland, both bridges and the whole Lekki-Epe axis, because a stalled connection in the middle of a traffic jam is the worst moment to lose navigation. Transfer apps, ride-hailing and translation between local languages all need data.

Café and mall Wi-Fi exists on the Island but is rarely worth the sign-up, and hotel bandwidth is shared. Hotspot from the phone for a laptop, which most plans allow. Two practical notes: power cuts are common enough that charging opportunities are unpredictable, so a power bank is close to essential, and long stationary hours in traffic with maps running are the single biggest drain on both battery and data during a Lagos day.
