Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is the gateway to the islands and sits just west of downtown Honolulu, with a long walk or shuttle between the interisland and overseas terminals. Physical SIM retail at the airport is limited and aimed at residents, which is awkward for the many visitors arriving on long transpacific flights who simply want to switch on and be reachable.

Uber and Lyft both operate on Oahu and serve the airport from designated pickup zones that are not the same as the taxi rank, and TheBus runs into Waikiki for a fraction of the cost with a bit more effort. If you are collecting a hire car, which most visitors do, the shuttle to the rental centre and the drive round the H-1 both benefit from live navigation. The major United States carriers all serve the islands, and Honolulu has broad 5G across Waikiki, downtown, Ala Moana and the airport corridor, with strong 4G filling the rest of the urban south shore.

Coverage follows the H-1 and H-2 freeways well and reaches most of the populated coastline. Where it gets interesting is the interior and the windward side: the Ko'olau ridge blocks signal in the deeper valleys, the Pali and Likelike tunnels cut out, and hikes into Manoa and Waimano lose service quickly once you are between the walls. Round the island, Kailua, Haleiwa and the North Shore beaches are covered, while the Kaena Point track at the western tip and stretches of the Waianae interior are not.

Download offline maps for the whole of Oahu, which is small enough to fit easily and saves you when a valley trail drops out. Several of the island's best-known sites, including Hanauma Bay and Diamond Head, use timed online reservations booked in advance and shown on arrival, so keep those confirmations offline too.

Hotel Wi-Fi in Waikiki is standard but often shared across a large tower and slow in the evening, and beach coverage is where you actually want data. Hotspot for a laptop works on most plans.
