Tbilisi International (TBS) lies about seventeen kilometres south-east of the city, and arrivals here skew heavily towards late-night and small-hours flights, which shapes everything. At two in the morning the airport bus is infrequent, the occasional train into Tbilisi Central runs to a sparse timetable, and the taxi drivers waiting outside quote optimistically. Bolt is the dominant ride-hailing app in Georgia and Yandex Go also operates, and both quote a fixed price in the app, which is the single best reason to land with data already working. Operator kiosks in arrivals sell tourist SIMs, but they are not always staffed at night. An eSIM installed at home on Wi-Fi is simply present in the phone: it stays dormant until the handset registers on a Georgian network after landing, and the validity period begins from that first connection rather than the purchase date.

Georgia's operators are Magti, Silknet and Cellfie, and a travel eSIM connects to the strongest partner network available. Tbilisi is well served: 5G is present in the central districts, and LTE is fast across the Old Town, Vake and Saburtalo, including the cable car to Narikala. The metro's two lines carry coverage at stations, with drops in the deeper tunnel runs. The country beyond is a study in contrasts. Mtskheta and the Kakheti wine roads are comfortably covered; the Georgian Military Highway to Gudauri and Kazbegi holds signal in the villages but loses it on the Jvari Pass and in the side valleys; and the Svaneti and Tusheti roads have long unserved stretches. Download offline maps of the Old Town, whose stepped lanes defeat navigation apps, and of any mountain route you plan to drive — the Kazbegi and Svaneti roads are where coverage genuinely stops. Data matters for ride-hailing, marshrutka and intercity bus information that lives on informal channels, restaurant and wine cellar bookings, and translation, since Georgian script gives no clues to a newcomer. Café Wi-Fi in Tbilisi is excellent and free almost everywhere, which makes the city easy; the countryside is not. Carry a power bank on day trips, which run long and involve constant navigation.
