Arriving in Dubai: airport SIM counters vs eSIM
Dubai International (DXB) sends most long-haul visitors through Terminal 3, and the walk from stand to taxi rank is long enough that a phone with no data becomes a genuine problem. Tourist SIM desks and vending machines sit in the arrivals halls, but they need a passport scan and a registration step, and at the pre-dawn bank of arrivals the queue can outlast immigration. An eSIM sidesteps that entirely: install it on Wi-Fi before you fly, and the validity clock only starts when the handset first registers on a UAE network after touchdown.
That first bar of signal is what opens Careem, Uber or Bolt at the kerb, or gets you onto the Dubai Metro Red Line, which has its own stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 and runs through to Burj Khalifa and Expo. The UAE runs on two networks, e& (Etisalat) and du, and both are heavily built out across Dubai on 4G with mature 5G in the built-up corridor from Deira down through Business Bay, Marina and Jumeirah. The Metro's underground section between Burjuman and the Creek stations is wired, so you keep a signal on the platform and in the tunnels. Congestion is the real limit rather than coverage: Dubai Mall on a Friday evening, the Global Village car parks and the Marina waterfront during festival weeks all slow down. Head out to Hatta or into the Lahbab and Al Marmoom dune belts on a desert safari and the signal genuinely thins between towers, which is worth planning for.
Staying connected in Dubai: practical tips
Download the Dubai and Sharjah map area offline before you land, because the interchanges on Sheikh Zayed Road are unforgiving if navigation drops. The UAE restricts consumer VoIP, so WhatsApp and FaceTime voice and video calls generally do not connect on any local network; licensed apps such as Botim are the usual workaround, and messaging still works normally. Keep the home SIM in slot one for bank OTPs, since our plans are data-only. Hotel Wi-Fi is reliable but often capped per device, so a hotspot from the eSIM is the easier fix for a laptop. Does an eSIM work on the Dubai Metro?
Yes. The Red and Green lines carry mobile coverage on elevated and underground sections alike, including the tunnelled stretch through Burjuman and Union, so you can keep checking journey times and stops. You will still want the nol card or the RTA app ready before you enter the gates.
Can I make WhatsApp calls in Dubai with an eSIM?
Voice and video calls over WhatsApp and similar apps are restricted across the UAE regardless of which network you use, so an eSIM will not change that. Text, images and voice notes work normally. Licensed calling apps available in the UAE are the usual alternative for spoken calls.
Is 5G available in Dubai?
Yes, 5G is widely available across the main city corridor, including Downtown, Business Bay, Deira, Marina and the airport area. Your device connects to the strongest available signal automatically, falling back to 4G in outlying industrial zones and in the desert beyond Hatta.
Will the plan still work on a day trip to Hatta or Abu Dhabi?
It will. Plans are country-wide, so the same data covers Hatta, Al Ain, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi without any change. Expect signal to fade in the mountain wadis around Hatta and in deep dune areas on a desert safari, where towers are simply further apart.
Do I need a UAE phone number to book a Careem or Uber ride?
No. Both apps let you sign in with your existing account and home number, and the driver contact runs through the app. Because our plans are data-only, keep your home SIM active for any SMS verification the app or your bank might send during the trip.
