Best eSIM for Zambia

Two very different trips share this country. One flies into Livingstone for Victoria Falls, the gorge and a couple of nights on the Zambezi; the other arrives at Kenneth Kaunda International (LUN) in Lusaka and heads for the walking safaris of South Luangwa or the camps in the Lower Zambezi and Kafue. Both involve small planes, transfers arranged over WhatsApp and lodges where the Wi-Fi is polite fiction. Getting a travel eSIM working before you leave home means the transfer driver can reach you and your itinerary is on your phone. Validity starts only when it first connects to a Zambian network.

MTN, Airtel and the state operator Zamtel are the networks in Zambia. Lusaka, Livingstone, Ndola and Kitwe on the Copperbelt have solid 4G, and the falls area is well covered. Inside the national parks it is a different picture: South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Kafue have signal near some camps and nothing on the game drives, so download offline maps and any documents before you leave the town.

A local SIM is worth it for a long overland trip, and shops in Lusaka and Livingstone sell them readily. For a safari of a week or two, an eSIM avoids the errand and keeps your home number live for the airline and the lodge. Roaming from Europe or India is the expensive option. If Zimbabwe is on the itinerary too, buy separately for each side of the falls.
