Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) does sell tourist SIMs, but the counters ask for your passport plus a second form of identification and the queue after a long-haul arrival is real. A Taiwan trip is usually eight to twelve days and circles the island: Taipei, then either the east coast to Hualien and Taitung or the west to Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung. Coverage is among the best you will encounter anywhere: dense along the entire west coast corridor, present throughout the Taipei MRT tunnels, and reliable on both the High Speed Rail and the slower east coast line. The gaps are mountain gaps — the cross-island highways, the upper Taroko trails, Alishan's forest routes and the Yushan approaches, where a ridge cuts you off completely.
