Few countries stretch a data plan like Argentina. The standard route runs from Buenos Aires to Iguazú in the subtropical north, then down to Bariloche, El Calafate and Ushuaia, which is several thousand kilometres of domestic flying and, for many travellers, long driving days on Ruta 40 with very little in between.

Those empty stretches are exactly why you want data sorted before arrival rather than after. The networks that exist in Argentina are Personal, Claro and Movistar, and coverage concentrates heavily in Buenos Aires, the pampas cities and the provincial capitals, where 4G LTE is solid and 5G has started in the largest cities. Away from those, the map empties out fast: long sections of Ruta 40, the steppe between Patagonian towns, high Andean passes near Mendoza and Salta, and much of the approach to the glaciers can leave you without service for an hour or more at a time.
